Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting: Tales Of Heroism Emerge

* Staffer, children found shelter in a storage closet
* Teacher put herself between bullets and her students
* Custodian ran through corridor verifying doors locked
By Chris Kaufman
NEWTOWN, Conn., Dec 15 (Reuters) - Elementary school library clerk Mary Ann Jacob heard gunshots and shouted "Lockdown!" to a class of fourth graders. Then she discovered the classroom door wouldn't lock.
Quickly, quietly she and other library staff got the 18 children down on the floor and crawled with them to a classroom storage closet. Hiding from the gunman who killed 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Friday, they barricaded themselves inside by shoving a file cabinet against the door.
"We settled them down with paper and crayons," Jacob told reporters on Saturday.
The gunfire suddenly ended and police came pounding at the door. But the library staff refused to open it until they slipped a badge under the door, Jacob said.
In the aftermath of the massacre, Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy on Friday said "evil" had descended upon the small community of Newtown. But emerging a day after the carnage were tales of heroism by school staff members, including the six who died.
There was first-grade teacher Vicki Leigh Soto, 27, who police said "put herself between the kids and the gunman's bullets" and whose body was found huddled with the students in a classroom closet, according to The Wall Street Journal.
And there were selfless survivors like first-grade teacher Kaitlin Roig. She told ABC News she scrambled her class into a cramped bathroom, locked the door and "told the kids I love them" in case those were the last words they ever heard.
A school custodian reportedly raced through the hallways echoing with gunfire to check that classroom doors were locked from the inside, the Newtown Bee newspaper said.
On Friday morning fourth graders were in Jacob's library classroom when the intercom sputtered to life with what sounded like a struggle in the school office.
"We heard some scuffling noises and stuff and I thought someone made a mistake," Jacob said. "So I called down there and the secretary answered the phone and said 'There's a shooting.'"
Then Jacob heard "popping noises" that she realized was gunfire.
"I shouted 'Lockdown!' and I ran across the hall and told the other class it was a lockdown," Jacob said.
She dashed back to her classroom and discovered that the door would not lock. Spying the storage closet in the room, Jacob and the rest of the library staff guided the children in a group-crawl to safety as the gunfire continued.
"We tried to minimize it with the kids. Just tried to keep it calm and quiet," she said. The staff told the children it was an active shooter drill that they had practiced before.
Later, Jacob said she found out that "the kids who died were in two first-grade classrooms."
Panicked parents converged on a firehouse near the school on Friday afternoon, terrified by the thought that their children might be among the dead.
"The teachers lined up, held up signs, the kids lined up behind them," Jacob said.
"There were a lot of parents running around. It came out pretty quickly that there were almost two full classes missing," she said.

Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm f2.8 Macro

By Jim Fisher

The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm f2.8 Macro ($499.99 direct) is a weather-sealed lens for Micro Four Thirds cameras that produces the field of view equivalent to a 120mm optic in full-frame photography. It can focus on objects as close as 7.4 inches, which allows for true 1:1 macro magnification. If the object you're shooting is one inch in length, the lens will project it onto the image sensor at the same one-inch length.

The lens is a bit larger when compared with most Micro Four Thirds lenses, but its dust-proof and splash-proof design necessitates that its focus remain entirely internal?most macro lenses extend in length as you focus closer, this one does not. It measures 3.2 by 2.2 inches (HD) and weighs 6.5 ounces. There's a focus limiter switch on the barrel, so you can set the lens to focus at any distance, only on distant objects, only on close objects, or set it manually to its closest focusing distance.

I used Imatest to check the sharpness of the lens when paired with the Olympus PEN Lite E-PL5. At f/2.8 its center performance is excellent at 2,590 lines per picture height, but its edge and corner performance leave a bit to be desired. This brings the center-weighted average down to 1,690 lines, just a tad shy of the 1,800 lines we use to define a sharp photo. Stopping down to f/4 increases the center-weighted score to 2,123 lines, and it hits 2,306 lines by f/8. Close the aperture any further and you'll start to see evidence of diffraction, which can rob an image of some sharpness?at f/11 it dips to 2,095 lines, and crosses over into soft territory again at f/16 and f/22, where it notches 1,618 and 1,118 lines respectively. Macro shots often require you to close the aperture for increased depth of field, and the smaller size of the Micro Four Thirds sensor actually helps to keep more of a shot in focus at f/11 as compared with a full-frame camera. Old photo pros who are used to shooting macro shots at f/22 and f/32 should be mindful of the disadvantages of using a Micro Four Thirds camera at such small apertures.

If you're a Micro Four Thirds user in the market for a dedicated macro lens, you only have a few native-mount options. The other, the Panasonic-made Leica DG Macro-Elmarit 45mm F2.8 ASPH OIS, offers a wider field of view and only supports 1:2 magnification, and commands a much higher $900 sticker price. The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm f2.8 Macro might not be corner-to-corner sharp at f/2.8, but it gets better as you stop down, delivering excellent resolution from f/4 to f/11. It's sealed against dust and splashes, making it ideal for use with the all-weather OM-D E-M5. Panasonic Micro Four Thirds shooters may be a bit hesitant, as the lens doesn't offer stabilization?that's a feature that Olympus builds into camera bodies, but Panasonic does not?but the small apertures that go hand-in-hand with macro photography generally necessitate the use of a tripod for the best results.

Documents: Prisoner plotted to kill Justin Bieber

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) ? An imprisoned man whose infatuation with Justin Bieber included a tattoo of the pop star on his leg has told investigators in New Mexico he hatched a plot to kill the singer, according to documents recently filed in a New Mexico court.

An affidavit filed in Las Cruces said Dana Martin told investigators he persuaded a man he met in prison and the man's nephew to kill Bieber, along with Bieber's personal bodyguard and two others not connected to the pop star.

The plot contained several gruesome details. Investigators say the plotters wanted to castrate two of the victims with hedge clippers before traveling to New York City to find Bieber. The targets of the castration plot were not connected to Bieber, authorities say, and it doesn't appear that the pop singer was ever in immediate danger of falling victim to the plot.

Martin, a Vermont man who is serving two life sentences for the 2000 killing of a 15-year-old girl, said he was angry at Bieber because he didn't respond to any of his letters. "This perceived slight made Mr. Martin upset and that, coupled with Mr. Martin's perception of being a 'nobody' in prison, led him to begin plotting the kidnap and murder of Victim 3," court documents said.

The documents identified Victim 3 as "J.B.," which New Mexico State Police spokesman Lt. Robert McDonald later confirmed was Justin Bieber.

Martin told investigators that Mark Staake and Tanner D. Ruane headed from New Mexico to the East Coast, planning to be near a Bieber concert scheduled in New York City after killing and castrating two others. They missed a turn and crossed into Canada from Vermont. Staake was arrested on an outstanding warrant. Ruane was arrested later.

Court documents say Martin told investigators that Bieber was the "ultimate target."

New York State Police said Thursday that troopers recovered tools and documents associated with the conspiracy while executing a search warrant on Ruane's vehicle. Among the items found by troopers were a "hand-written drawing of a depiction of Justin Bieber."

Staake, 41, of Albuquerque, has been charged with two counts each of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit aggravated battery with a deadly weapon in connection to the plan.

Ruane, 23, Staake's nephew, also is facing multiple charges related to the plot.

Clinton Norris, of the New Mexico State Police investigations bureau in Las Cruces, said in an affidavit that Martin instructed the suspects to strangle the two first intended targets with paisley neckties, the same kind used in his 2000 murder case. The documents do not give details on how they were to kill Bieber.

McDonald declined to say if any of the murder charges are linked to Bieber. "That is part of the ongoing investigation," he said.

Bieber's management issued a statement that said, "we take every precaution to protect and insure the safety of Justin and his fans."

It was not immediately known if the suspects had defense lawyers.
